No more money for ICE

The MAGA murder budget passed in July nearly tripled the funding for ICE, giving them enormous resources to disappear our neighbors and terrorize our communities. Meanwhile, conditions in detention facilities just keep getting worse, with the most deaths in custody in at least 20 years. At least 20 people have died in ICE custody, and the GOP wants to give them even more money, with stalled appropriations bills in both houses of Congress increasing spending on immigration enforcement *again*.

The Detention Watch Network is rallying folks to pressure their reps against yet another expansion of the deportation machine. Oregon family caught in an ice nightmare

Jackie and Carlos Merlos have lived in the U.S. for more than 20 years. They live in Portland, Oregon, where they are business owners, churchgoers, and parents of four young children, who are all U.S. citizens.

On June 28, immigration agents detained Jackie, her mother, and her four young U.S. citizen children while they were visiting Jackie’s sister at Peace Arch State Park, which straddles the U.S.-Canada border. CBP agents arrested the family, under the false and outlandish allegation that Jackie was engaged in “human trafficking” — all because her sister, a legal permanent resident of Canada, stepped her foot over the border line while hugging her family goodbye.

CBP and ICE went to extraordinary lengths to disappear this family, including denying Jackie access to a lawyer, interrogating young children, and even ordering them passports in a rushed attempt to deport them from the U.S., their home and country of birth.

Our friends at the National Immigration Law Center are leading the charge to apply pressure to the deportation machine and demand the Merlos family be released, and they’re asking for our help.
