Save Higher Education

From Timothy Snyder 10/7

Timothy Snyder is an American historian, university professor, and author of On Tyranny. He is urging us to sign a petition to college and university leaders written by The American Federation of Teachers and the American Association of University Professors.

"One of the many wrongs of this last week has been an attempt by the Trump administration to destroy American higher education: by way of “compacts” in which universities and other institutions would sacrifice their independence and the freedoms of the students, staff and faculty in exchange for essentially nothing — a meaningless assurance though not a binding obligation that the government might perhaps then follow its legal and contractual obligations to fund research. This amounts to an attempt to make American institutions of higher education resemble those in, for example, Russia: where the government is always present to enforce its daily ideological preferences and the universities and other schools must go along. "

Congress Must Take Immediate Action to Reverse Harmful SNAP Cuts

From Jessica Craven at Chop Wood Carry Water 9/22 and the Food Research and Action Center

The Restoring Food Security for American Families and Farmers Act of 2025 - recently introduced by Senator Ben Ray Luján and Congresswoman Jahana Hayes - would repeal the damaging budget reconciliation cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Use the FRAC Action Network to send a pre-scripted email to your Members of Congress urging them to reject any Farm Bill that does not address the recent, devastating SNAP cuts and to actively pursue every legislative avenue to restore SNAP.

Thank the judges who are holding the line

Facing threats, political pressure, and a Supreme Court that has frequently not had their backs, lower court judges are still doing vitally important work to keep this administration’s power within the bounds of the law. Let’s acknowledge their work and send encouragement to keep fighting!

Judge Waverly Crenshaw Jr. ruled that the Trump administration is vindictively prosecuting Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was abducted to El Salvador in March. Send a note or postcard to Judge Crenshaw to thank him for standing up for Kilmar’s rights and against this egregious abuse of power to cover up for Trump’s misdeeds:

Judge Waverly Crenshaw Jr.
United States District Court Middle District of Tennessee
719 Church Street, Suite 1300
Nashville, TN 37203

Judge Michael Roemer found that the state of New York illegally put a thruway on a portion of the land of the Seneca Nation. Send a note or postcard to Judge Roemer to thank him for upholding the land rights of the Seneca Nation:

Hon. Michael J. Roemer
United States Magistrate Judge
Robert H. Jackson United States Courthouse
2 Niagara Square
Buffalo, New York 14202

Judge William Young ruled that the constitutional right to freedom of speech extends also to immigrants, meaning they are protected from being prosecuted for protesting. Send a not or postcard to Judge Young to thank him for taking this importance stance:

Judge William Young
John Joseph Moakley U.S. Courthouse
1 Courthouse Way, Suite 2300
