Buffalo residents: Pass a Good Cause Eviction Law for Buffalo

As part of the FY2025 State Budget, Governor Hochul signed the Good Cause Eviction Law which affords anti-price gouging and eviction protections for New York renters. The budget makes annual rent increases above 10% or 5% plus the Consumer Price Index (whichever is lower) presumptively unreasonable to protect tenants against price gouging and strengthens legal protections for covered renters in eviction proceedings, where applicable. These protections initially applied to unregulated units in New York City; however, municipalities outside of New York City can opt-in to the program. Many already have including Rochester, Ithaca, and Albany. Learn more about Good Cause Eviction here and here.

If you are a Buffalo resident, please sign this petition urging the Common Council to pass a Good Cause Eviction law for Buffalo: Good Cause Eviction Petition

Extend the ACA Tax Credits

from Jessica Craven at Chop Wood Carry Water 7/22 and 5 Calls

Affordable Care Act plan premiums are projected to increase by 75% starting in January 2026, driven largely by the expiration of ACA plan tax credits at the end of 2025. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that 4.2 million people will lose coverage by 2034 if the tax credits are not renewed. Congress must act now to protect millions of Americans’ health insurance.

Call or email your senators and House member and tell them to extend the ACA tax credits. Write your own script or use this one:

Please ask the Senator/Congressmember to protect the availability of affordable healthcare by extending the ACA tax credits. Millions of us rely on the ACA for coverage, and a 75% increase in the cost of premiums on January 1st will be financially devastating for so many people. Thank you.
