Block the Reconciliation Budget Bill in the Senate

(adapted from Jessica Craven at Chop Wood Carry Water 6/12)

The GOP reconciliation budget bill passed the House and is now being rewritten in the Senate where it is purportedly getting even worse. The Senate version cuts Medicaid even more than the House version AND includes a massive new attack on public lands. It also still kills most clean energy tax credits, has vicious cuts to SNAP, student loans, and affordable housing, and defunds Planned Parenthood. It also gives a huge amount of money to ICE.

Call or email your senators with the following message or similar:

If Republican:

I’m sure the Senator has seen the new Quinnipiac polling showing that a majority of voters hate Republicans’ budget bill, especially the cuts to Medicaid. In case s/he hasn’t seen it, 47% of Americans think Medicaid funding should increase, while 40% think it should stay about the same. Just 10% think federal funding should decrease. The bill passed by the House will end Medicaid coverage for millions of people. Shameful. Please tell the Senator to vote no.

[If you are in West VA, NC (Tillis), Maine, PA (McCormick), Alaska, Iowa, Arkansas, Ohio, ND (Hoeven), or Kansas (Moran) please add:]

One more thing: this bill kills the Inflation Reduction Act’s clean energy tax credits that are bringing major manufacturing projects to our state. If the Senator votes for it, I will be sure to let everyone know that they lost their jobs because of him/her. Vote no! Thanks.

If Democrat:

I’m asking the Senator to get more aggressive in highlighting how bad the GOP reconciliation bill is. I just heard that half of America doesn’t even know it exists. Once Americans learn what’s in the bill, they strongly oppose it but they’re still way too uninformed. The Senator has a huge platform, and s/he should get more creative about educating his/her constituents. We elected him/her to fight for us. Right now fighting looks like getting very loud about the massive harm this bill will do—not just to our healthcare system and nutritional assistance but also to our environment, to jobs and to student borrowers. Thanks.

Hold Kristi Noem accountable for the assault of Alex Padilla

(from Jessica Craven at Chop Wood Carry Water 6/13)

On June 12, Senator Alex Padilla was tackled and handcuffed by FBI and Secret Service agents for trying to ask Kristi Noem a question during a press briefing. Noem and the GOP are lying about what happened even though there’s a video showing the whole incident.

Call or email your senators and House rep and demand that they speak out and conduct an investigation of the incident. Write your own script or use this one:

I am appalled by the assault on Senator Padilla by Kristi Noem's staff. What is happening in our country? This is not a dictatorship! We don’t assault Senators for asking a question. Congress needs to condemn these actions and demand a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the role of Secretary Noem and the security personnel involved.

My name is ______. I’m calling Senator Thune in his capacity as Senate Majority leader. I am outraged by the treatment of Senator Padilla last week by Kristi Noem’s staff. Tackling and assaulting a U.S. Senator for asking a question is totally uncalled for, horrifying, and not who we are as a country.

I want the Senator to demand an immediate apology from Ms. Noem and her staff and request an immediate end to the inflammatory rhetoric about what is happening in LA and elsewhere around the country. Enough is enough. He needs to speak out for what’s right, for the rule of law, and in support of the people he’s supposed to represent. Thanks.

T-Mobile funds the far right in doing business with Musk

(From Joe Katz at Rogan's List 6/18)

Taking down authoritarianism requires knocking out its pillars of support, especially in the business community, and no one has done more than #TeslaTakedown in forcing corporations to pay a price for siding with the fascists. Already conducting regular protests and public divestment campaigns, they’re now expanding their efforts, pressuring T-Mobile to cancel its contracts with Starlink and stop funding Elon Musk’s attacks on democracy. Musk is set to gain billions from their “T-Satellite” program launching next month.

Show your support for this campaign by signing a petition to T-Mobile’s CEO and board of directors, even if you're not a T-Mobile customer.  Follow this link to sign the petition: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/t-mobile-stop-funding-musk
