New York Residents: Due Process For Yuriy Zinovyev

We have learned about a New Yorker who is being detained by ICE without due process. Yuriy Zinovyev has lived and worked legally in the United States for over 25 years. He had Temporary Protected Status, a type of legal immigration status which required him to report to immigration court every six months. Mr. Zinovyev was arrested by ICE agents on June 3rd during a routine immigration court appearance in Balston Spa, NY and transferred to Buffalo Federal Detention Center. Yuriy’s friends and neighbors are fearful he will be sent to an overseas prison, such as CECOT in El Salvador. Learn more here.

Call or write your senators and your House rep and urge them to use their power to insist that Yuriy Zinovyev be given full access to due process and the courts.

I’m calling/writing out of concern for Yuriy Zinovyev, who has been detained by ICE at the Buffalo Federal Detention Center in Batavia. Mr. Zinovyev has been in the U.S. legally on Temporary Protected Status for many years. ICE arrested him without due process on June 3rd during a routine immigration check at the courthouse in Balston Spa. I urge you to denounce the arrest of Mr. Zinovyev and any person here legally who is following the rules to continue to stay in this country. If there is no due process for this man, there is no due process for anyone.

Block Trump’s Rescissions Bill

Many of the cuts that Musk and DOGE made were illegal and blocked by the courts. The only way Trump can claw that money back is if Congress approves it. So, the White House has sent a “rescissions” bill (H.R. 4) to Congress to rubber stamp $9.4 billion worth of his thefts from public services. The bill targets funding for NPR and PBS and would legalize the gutting of our foreign aid programs.

It is estimated that the Trump/Musk gutting the U.S. Agency for International Development has resulted in  as many as 300,000 deaths already and that millions more will die every year from malnutrition, malaria, HIV/AIDS, and Ebola. Furthermore, they are making the world more unstable and less friendly to the United States, with shortages opening the door for conflict and other nations concluding we cannot be counted on. The cuts also put 200,000 American jobs and $23 billion in US exports at risk.

The public broadcasting cuts would be devastating to local PBS and NPR stations, threatening a crucial source of local news. Many public stations are the primary provider for their region, especially in rural areas, and provide children’s and educational content beloved by so many. They’re even a key part of disaster response systems in many places.

The bill has already passed the House and only needs a simple majority to pass the Senate. Call or email your senators and tell them to oppose this bill. Write your own script or use this one:

I want the Senator to oppose Trump’s rescissions bill gutting foreign aid, NPR and PBS. The freezes at USAID have already cost 300,000 lives and made the world more dangerous and more anti-American. Public broadcasting cuts threaten one of the last remaining outlets for local, non-corporate controlled news in so many communities, not to mention disaster response and the programs we raise our kids on. Once again, the rich get richer at the expense of regular Americans. Thank you.

Block Confirmation of Anthony Tata, Trump’s Pentagon Pick

Anthony Tata, Trump’s nominee for Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, would be charged with overseeing three million service members and civilian defense workers. He’s also a virulent bigot, a conspiracy monger completely out of touch with reality, and backed using our troops for Trump’s political agenda. Tata has a long record of hateful comments against Black Americans and Muslims. He also spread the birther lie about President Obama and deemed him a “terrorist leader” and a secret Muslim. Even more wildly, he suggested former CIA director John Brennan ordered Donald Trump’s assassination and claimed the National Guard and some of our troops were “compromised.”

Tata has backed Trump’s purges, doubled down on his support during his confirmation hearing, and explicitly called for the suspension of posse comitatus in January. This is not a man who respects the values that have preserved our democracy.
