Detained immigrants are being tortured with solitary confinement
Adapted from Joe Katz at Rogan at Rogan’s List 9/17 and Physicians for Human Rights
Unprecedented levels of arrests and detention carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are causing fear in immigrant communities across the country. And once inside ICE detention centers, people seeking asylum and fleeing violence and persecution are being subjected to unimaginable cruelty.
A new report, entitled “Cruelty Campaign: Solitary Confinement in U.S. Immigration Detention” by Physicians for Human Rights and their partners revealed that ICE is using solitary confinement to punish and cause harm to immigrants in detention. They found at least 10,000 people were placed in solitary confinement in immigration detention centers over just 14 months, and during the first four months of Trump 2.0 the use of solitary confinement accelerated dramatically to twice historical rates.
PHR is asking folks to contact their members of Congress in response to this report and demand they end ICE’s use of solitary confinement. Follow the link below to Add your name to PHR’s call for action to urging your Members of Congress to end ICE’s inhumane, cruel, and avoidable use of solitary confinement. https://secure.phr.org/secure/end-cruelty-solitary-confinement-ice-detention
Tell Congress to pass the SPEED Act
From Climate Action Now
A new bipartisan bill for desperately needed energy-focused permitting reform, the Standardizing Permitting and Expediting Economic Development (SPEED) Act (H.R.4776), has emerged from the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives. It’s already won the support of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, as its many provisions include an exemption from the increasingly hyper-onerous National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review process for rural electric cooperatives receiving federal grants.
Follow this link to learn more and send a pre-scripted message (which you can edit) to your members of congress urging them to pass the SPEED Act: https://www.votervoice.net/mobile/CLIMATE/Campaigns/130258/Respond
Provide feedback to the Buffalo Bills regarding their tribute to Charlie Kirk
At the September 18 home game against the Dolphins, the Buffalo Bills chose to do a video tribute to Charlie Kirk. They were one of ten NFL teams that honored Kirk that week. Seven other teams chose to do nothing or did a different tribute. The Houston Texans held a moment of silence for all victims of violence without mentioning Kirk. The NFL mandated a Kirk tribute at the Packers game on September 11 but then left it up to each team to decide whether or not to follow suit. The Bills could have chosen a less provocative option.
