Thank or Berate your House Rep over their Vote on the Reconciliation Bill
Adapted from Jessica Craven at Chop Wood Carry Water – May 22:
All but 5 Republican representatives voted for the reconciliation bill last week. Fiscal hawks, Thomas Massie of KY and Warren Davidson of OH, voted no. Andy Harris of MD (Chair of the Freedom Caucus) voted present while David Schweikert of AZ and Andrew Gabarino of NY missed the vote. Every Democrat voted against it. Let’s thank our Democratic reps and let our Republican reps know what we think of them. Use these scripts as inspiration. Don’t forget to change the pronouns.
If your Rep is Republican:
I’m livid that the representative voted for the reconciliation bill. Republicans are liars. They say they’re budget hawks but just supported a bill that would add at least $3 trillion to the deficit. They say they’re “for working Americans” but just passed a bill that will kill 800,000 jobs over 10 years. They say work requirements won’t push people off of their healthcare when experts tell us that they will. They claim to love kids but just voted to take food away from 4 million of them. If the representative doesn’t change his/her vote on this bill I will dedicate every waking hour to making sure that s/he is voted out next year. The fact that s/he is putting Trump and billionaires above his/her constituents is a disgrace. Thanks.
If your Rep is a Democrat:
I wanted to thank the representative for voting no on the horrible reconciliation bill. I know House Democrats worked really hard to stop it, and I appreciate both their dedication to that fight as well as their collective efforts to keep us all informed about what was happening. Please tell the representative to get some rest and then come back and help us fight again. We need to kill this bill. Thanks.
Stop the Intimidation Tactics of ICE and Homeland Security
Adapted from Joe Katz - Rogan's List - 5/20:
Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba, formerly Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, is charging Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) with assault and impeding a law enforcement officer over the confrontation created by ICE agents when the Congresswoman and several of her colleagues attempted to do their job and conduct an oversight visit at an immigration detention facility in Newark. (Habba dropped charges against Mayor Ras Baraka, who was arrested for trespassing at the time.)
This act comes just months after Trump pardoned violent insurrectionists who assaulted police in the name of returning him to the White House on January 6th. It is also the latest escalation in this administration’s efforts to use state power to criminalize dissent at a very basic level and punish those they deem political enemies, especially those who push back against mass deportation and mass detention.
Trying to throw opposition politicians in jail on flimsy excuses is tyrannical, the stuff of tinpot dictatorships. And their excuse is deeply weak – it seems unlikely ICE would have allowed McIver to tour the facility after committing an assault against them. Trump is attempting to use the government as a weapon, silencing those who have spoken up against him. This is not something leaders do in free, democratic nations. It is something real Americans resist.
Call or email your members of Congress and tell them to insist these charges be dropped and call on Habba to testify under oath about how they came about, who approved them, and who may have directed her to file them.
Use the following script as inspiration:
Trump’s former personal lawyer filing charges against Rep. LaMonica McIver should outrage every patriotic American. Trying to throw opposition politicians in jail on flimsy excuses is tyrannical. It’s what insecure kings and tinpot dictators do, not the leaders of free countries.
You must immediately and loudly condemn this authoritarian act by the Trump Administration. They must demand the charges be dropped and push for Alina Habba to answer questions under oath about who approved them and who directed her to file them. You also need to recognize that Donald Trump’s continued abuse of authority is a real and growing threat to our democracy, and act accordingly.
Protect this country and do what is in your power to draw the line.
Thank you for your consideration.
Other points that could be included in a script:
Rep. McIver and her colleagues were trying to do their job, performing an oversight visit at an immigration detention facility. The law is very clear they were allowed to do so and did not need to provide any prior notice.
The confrontation was created by out-of-control agents from an out-of-control agency.
There’s no way Rep. McIver would have politely been given a tour of Delaney Hall by agents she had just assaulted.
This administration is using state power to criminalize dissent and retaliate against political enemies. Examples include: Investigation into AG Letitia James, inquiries into Schumer and Garcia, threats against AOC and Jasmine Crockett, executive order targeting law firm, ActBlue investigation, threats to pull Harvard tax exempt status, threats against Beyonce and Springsteen, targeting of students like Rumeysa Ozturk and Mohsen Mahdawi, targeting of farmworker organizers like Lelo Juarez, Texas lawyer Clay Jackson
It is a total rejection of our most cherished values, and it is only going to get worse from here
