Actions for the Week of 2/16/25

Say NO to the SAVE Act (let's do this one again!)

This is a repeat action. Even if you did it before, please do it again.

The SAVE Act is an extreme voter suppression bill that passed the House last year but wasn't brought up in the Senate when Dems were in control. It was reintroduced last month and will likely pass again and be brought up for a vote in the Republican controlled Senate. If passed, most Americans would be unable to register to vote using their driver's license or other state-provided identification alone.

The SAVE Act would disproportionately harm:

  • up to 150 million Americans who do not have a passport;

  • approximately 69 million women citizens who do not have a birth certificate with their current legal name on it;

  • elderly Americans, who are the least likely to hold passports;

  • and young people who would face hurdles that already-registered citizens do not face.

The SAVE Act isn’t necessary—voting by non-citizens is already illegal and is exceedingly rare. There is so much that is wrong with this bill! Read more about it from the Civic Center’s Laura Brill here or from the Center for American Progress here.

Tell your Representatives to reject the budget bill proposed by Republicans in the House

House Republicans have proposed a truly despicable budget bill that would cut $1.5 trillion from essential assistance programs for millions of the most vulnerable people in the country to help defray $4.5 trillion in tax cuts for wealthy corporations and individuals. Get the details here

Call or email your House Representative and tell him/her to reject this budget. Find contact info for your House Rep here. Write your own script or use these.

If your rep is a Republican:

I know House Republicans are pushing one big funding bill that slashes access to health care, public education, and food assistance while giving massive handouts to billionaires. It also includes poison pill riders attacking abortion rights, LGBTQ+ protections, and immigrant communities. AND it lets Trump and Musk hijack federal funds and override congressional spending decisions. This is not responsible governance—it’s corruption. I expect you to do your job and reject any budget that allows Trump to override government spending and attack working families. Thanks.

If your rep is a Democrat:

As your constituent, I’m asking you to play hardball in the upcoming funding fight. Refuse to vote for any bill that hands Trump and his billionaire allies a blank check. Republicans can’t pass a budget without Democratic votes. That means: No vote for any funding bill without real, enforceable protections to stop Trump from overriding the budget. No poison pill riders attacking abortion rights, LGBTQ+ protections, or immigrant communities. No cuts to Medicaid, Social Security, or food assistance. Thanks.

Modify shopping habits to help get money out of politics

Did you know that the average consumer funds politicians and PACs about 3 times more through their purchasing decisions as compared to their direct political contributions?

Goods Unite Us is a non-partisan organization that “runs political background checks on thousands of brands and companies so you can put your money where your vote is. Goods Unite Us is about bringing more accountability and transparency to our political process. Look up the political giving of brands and companies and start making a difference today!”

You can download their app or just search for products/companies on their website. Based on several objective criteria, each company is assigned a Campaign Finance Reform score from -100 (worst) to +100 (perfect) depending on how likely money spent on that company's products will lead to political influence.

The score is based on:

  1. whether or not the company makes political donations and how much (the more they donate, the lower the score);

  2. whether or not they donate to progressive individuals and PACs that are actively working to repeal or limit the impact of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision.

The only companies that get a perfect score of 100 are ones that make no significant political donations.

Check out the 5 Calls Website/App

5 Calls has been around since the first Trump term and offers a very quick and easy way to make calls to your elected representatives. Enter your zip code or address and pick a topic. Then choose the representative you want to call, make the call, and read the script provided. Calling your congressperson is the most effective way to influence policy. Please check it out if you haven't already done so.
